Right Here in Mason City

From one responsibility to the next… so from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where we renewed our drivers’ licenses and spent some time, we wheeled our rig to Forest City, Iowa, where we had a list of things for Winnebago to look at.

We hooked up to the electrical pedestal, set up our chairs, took our bikes off the Jeep, and settled in to see if our name would come up any earlier than expected. What better time to experiment with my new camera’s special settings, like the extra vivid option that makes the sky so blue but the white Winnie so yellow?

Enough of that. Time to explore. Every time we return to a place we’ve been before we try to discover something new. We’d drive through Mason City before, but made a special trip this time to visit. My architect brother will not be pleased to hear I wasn’t aware this was a Frank Lloyd Wright town, but spotting the Park Inn was like finding a treasure buried in the sand when you’re absent-mindedly digging on the beach with a plastic shovel.

The distinctive Wright style is evident in the details. His use of color and geometric shapes in the windows and brickwork were among the signatures of Wright’s work.

The city bank building next door (around the corner) looks as though it carries the same style:

And is this another example of the great architect’s work, or a variation? This building, now a tapas bar and restaurant called The Quarry, abuts the bank building, so maybe…?

I just know this: hats off to the innovative, brave soul who was Frank Lloyd Wright 🙂

Across the street, we spent time in the park where these incredible monuments were erected to local men and women who have served in the military. Bob’s an Air Force veteran, so we always appreciate a salute like this one to all vets.
