Future Birthplace

Riverside, Iowa, doesn’t look much different than many small towns as you drive into it, so — like us — you might not realize at first glance that this is a very special place.

But it is. Or it will be, come March 22, 2233, when James Tiberius Kirk is born here.

When Gene Roddenberry created the character profile for Captain James T. Kirk, he decided smalltown Iowa was a suitable birthplace, but he didn’t specify which town in Iowa. Enterprising (get it?!?) Riverside residents decided this was an opportunity not to be overlooked, and petitioned Roddenberry to be the official birthplace (in the future, of course) for Captain Kirk. Roddenberry agreed.

Somewhere in one of the buildings behind a barbershop (locals could probably tell you where) James T. Kirk will grow up.

The town celebrates Trekfest every year (learn more at http://www.trekfest.com), and though we missed it this year, we’re sure this makes an appearance during the festival:

If you’re a fan, consider attending, if for no other reason than the town seems to be struggling; you can’t let a town this important fall into ruin, can you?
