Fifth Annual BEST EATS Awards!

BestBadge

It’s that time again! Regular followers of Bob & Ellen’s Great RV Adventure know we love finding great meals on the road. Bob’s such an excellent cook it’s hard for us to want to eat at a restaurant to start with, so when a place impresses us, we like to spread the word.

Unfortunately, sometimes a place isn’t the same when we return. New owners, different cook, maybe just a bad day. Sometimes we’ve discovered a sanitation issue since our previous visit that’s made us not want to return (eeewwwww! but sadly true).

Restaurants that use local and organic ingredients, and prohibit smoking and animals are favored. We haven’t yet found a casino where we either didn’t have to walk through the smoky gaming areas to get to the restaurant or sit in a roomful of residual smoke, so you won’t see many casinos make the BESTS list — at least not yet. We’ve heard California doesn’t allow smoking in casinos, so this might change in future BEST EATS lists.

For brevity, this year’s list only includes new categories and categories where the #1 or #2 spot changed. For full lists, see previous years’ posts.

Have your own list of bests? Disagree with any of our choices? Chime in! We’d love to hear your recommendations!

  1. I love reading your list and after reading this one I am hungry!

    • Ellen says:

I get hungry writing it, then I get hungry again when I add the photos to it, and by the time I post it, I’m starving!! But so worthwhile when it helps get the word out about great places to eat! Where’s your favorite spot for a good meal on the road?

      • Most of my favorite spots are in the south. Here are just a few from the last couple of years. Shrimp and Grits at Smith’s Coastal Grill in Eatonton, Georgia. BBQ Brisket at Cooper’s BBQ in Llano, Texas. Pulled pork BBQ at Jones Bar-B-Que Diner in Marianna, Arkansas. Tamales at Doe’s Eat Place in Greenville, Mississippi. Crawfish Etoufee at Poche’s Market and Restaurant in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. Steamed seafood platters at The Crab Shack in Tybee Island, Georgia.

    • Ellen says:

Beth — For some whacky WordPress reason I can’t respond right under your most recent comment, but I want to send a huge THANK YOU! for your suggestions. Every year we think it might be time to cover those southern states we haven’t hit yet, but every year it seems to pour rain, threaten hurricanes, or turn so hot and humid it could steam broccoli!! (Yep, I’m a weather wuss…) Even so, I’m going to add your favorites to my “recommended eats” list in hopes that we’ll get out that way. Thanks again!

  2. I love that so many of your favorites are in my neck of the woods ~ PNW. Means I can reasonably visit these places to check them out myself! I do like all of your blog entries, though. I feel like you’re chatting to friends while sitting around a campfire, drinking cowboy coffee and relaxing. 🙂

    • Ellen says:

Thanks so much! I guess it pays off that I talk to myself sometimes…. gives me practice 🙂 Would love to hear *your* favorites up around there! We just can’t find any good places to eat in Forks, WA, so if you have a suggestion, we’ll try it out next time we’re through there!

  3. RV Cheaper! says:

Wow, with some luck I can go try all of those places some day soon 🙂

  4. I loved your list. What a nice thing to do. When Kay and I travel we love trying the local cuisine. I think we need to keep a log.

    • Ellen says:

When we pull into a town after being away for awhile, I’ll say, “Oh… this is where we found that great [insert favorite food]!” and Bob says, “How do you remember stuff like that?” I tell him it’s this list. Making a list… checking it twice… letting it evolve over the years… all that helps me to remember 🙂 Let us know what great eats you and Kay find along the way, okay?
